Vision

Demi van den Berg

Demi van den Berg is an attorney in the field of (European) competition law and sector-specific regulation. In her daily practice, she particularly focuses on cartels, vertical (distribution) agreements, abuse of dominance, merger control and foreign direct investments. Demi also regularly advises on consumer protection laws and other competition related topics such as the EU Services Directive.

Demi has a particular affinity with digital markets and the media, telecoms, travel and sports sector. She assists clients in civil proceedings as well as before the European Commission, the Dutch Authority for Consumers & Markets (ACM) and other regulators such as the The Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate (ILT).

Prior to joining bureau Brandeis, Demi followed the master’s specialisation European Business Law at the Radboud University Nijmegen. With her thesis on the Digital Markets Act, Demi obtained her master’s degree summa cum laude in 2021. During her studies, Demi worked as a clerk at the District Court of Gelderland and worked as a teacher in the Jurisprudence Department of the Faculty of Law in Nijmegen.

In 2019, Demi won the European Law Moot Court Competition. In this prestigious competition for European Law, she successfully pleaded before the judges of the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg and consequently undertook an internship in the chambers of Advocate-General Bobek.

Demi is a member of the Dutch Competition Law Association (Vereniging voor Mededingingsrecht) and the Association for Investment Screening (Vereniging voor Investeringstoetsing).

Panter Elsenburg

Panter Elsenburg is a junior associate at bureau Brandeis. She works within the section Corporate and Commercial litigation.

In 2023 Panter completed her master’s degree in private law cum laude at the University of Amsterdam. She wrote her master thesis about the legislative proposal for the removal of pledge bans (Wetsvoorstel opheffing verpandingsverboden). During her studies, Panter gained experience as a legal assistant at Flinck Advocaten. There she developed a particular interest in civil law. In addition, Panter was active as a board member of Stichting Ad Forum.

Vision

Bente van Kan

Bente van Kan is a junior associate at bureau Brandeis. She has been working in the gaming, media and telecommunications practice since 2023. Bente acts in various administrative law procedures, advising, among others, on scarce licences, the Open Government Act (Wet open overheid) and gambling legislation.

Bente completed the Master’s degree in Information Law at the University of Amsterdam in 2023. During her studies, she focused in particular on intellectual property law and the liability of online intermediaries. She wrote her master’s thesis on sustainability in trademark law from the perspective of ‘Upcycling’.

During her studies, Bente also gained work experience at various legal firms, both within the legal profession and the notarial practice.

Sarah Stapel

Sarah Stapel is an attorney at bureau Brandeis. She specializes in information law, with a particular focus on privacy and data protection law.

In 2021, she completed her research master in information law at the Institute for Information Law (IViR) at the University of Amsterdam (UvA). Her research focused on data subject rights under the GDPR, the boundaries (online) freedom of expression, and platform liability. She wrote her master’s thesis on the (hidden) discriminatory impact of automated decision-making in recruitment software and how job applicants can use the rights in the GDPR as a means of resistance.

During her studies, Sarah followed exchange programmes at the University of Melbourne in Australia and at Cardozo Law School in New York. At IViR, she organized and participated in the annual Privacy Law & Policy Summer Course.

Sarah works at bureau Brandeis since 2021.

Vision

Maxime Eljon

Maxime Eljon is paralegal at bureau Brandeis. She specializes in solving corporate and commercial disputes.

In 2022 Maxime completed her master’s degree at the University of Amsterdam. During her studies she taught tort law in the law bachelor at the university.

From 2019 to 2021 Maxime handled the legal and financial affairs of the student-run foundation 180 Degrees Consulting Amsterdam. The foundation provides consultancy services to non-profits and social impact organizations.

Vision

Stefan Vissink

Stefan is an associate at bureau Brandeis and works in the fields of Corporate Litigation and Commercial Litigation. Stefan mainly advises and litigates on shareholder disputes, liability procedures, post-closing M&A disputes and inquiry procedures at the Enterprise Chamber. In addition, he deals with complex cross-border disputes and class actions.

Stefan started his career in 2016 at a law firm in Utrecht and he has been working at bureau Brandeis since May 2022. Stefan obtained his master’s degree in Law & Business at the University of Utrecht. During his studies, Stefan participated in the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot, an international moot court in the field of the CISG and arbitration.

Vision

Sophie Harenberg

Sophie Harenberg is an associate at bureau Brandeis. She specializes in corporate and commercial litigation. Sophie represents clients in complex (cross-border) disputes, including class actions and contractual disputes. She also deals with corporate law issues, such as directors’ and officers’ liability and shareholder disputes.

Sophie obtained in 2010 her master’s degree in Dutch Law at the University of Utrecht and in 2011 her master’s degree in Criminal Law at the University of Amsterdam. After graduating, Sophie first worked for several years as a senior legal assistant at the Amsterdam Court of Appeal and the Amsterdam District Court. In that position she participated in a variety of court hearings and drafted many decisions.

In February 2019 Sophie was admitted to the Bar Association. She previously worked as an attorney in the corporate and commercial litigation practice of Evers Soerjatin N.V. in Amsterdam.

Sophie joined bureau Brandeis in June 2022.

Vision

Alexander van Lunteren

Alexander van Lunteren is an attorney at Brandeis and specialises in information law.

During law school, his interest focused on the interplay between law and society. As a student mentor, he provided legal assistance to the legal clinic. He also studied for a semester in Washington D.C. (Georgetown Law) and completed his Bachelor at the University of Amsterdam cum laude. From a social interest in the freedom of expression and the right to privacy, he followed the master’s in information law at the Institute for Information Law (IViR).

During his studies Alexander also immersed himself in the practice of law during internships and extracurricular programmes. He was active within the Amsterdam Law Firm and won the Amsterdam Law Trials moot court competition. This passion also led to his remained involvement in pleading competitions as a coach.

Alexander has been working at bureau Brandeis since 2021.

Kin Foon Liew

Kin Foon Liew works as a junior associate at bureau Brandeis. He specializes in resolving commercial and corporate disputes.

Kin Foon completed his master’s degree in corporate law cum laude at the Radboud University. Because of his interest in financial law he followed extracurricular courses in this area during his master’s degree.

During his studies, he taught several civil law courses to fellow students, supervised first-year law students as a tutor and was active as an ambassador for Mr. Online (a legal platform).

In his spare time Kin Foon provides residents of the Achterhoek with legal advice at Rechtswinkel Achterhoek.

Lisa Uppelschoten

Lisa works at Brandeis in the Gaming, Media and Telecommunications practice. She advises clients from these sectors on, among other things, administrative procedures, applying for the necessary licenses and the rules for advertising and marketing.

In November 2021 Lisa completed her master’s degree in Information Law at the University of Amsterdam. During her bachelor Utrecht Law College at the University of Utrecht, Lisa studied a semester at the Ludwig Maximilians-Universität in Munich.

During her studies, Lisa gained broad experience in the legal sector. She worked as an external clerk at the Court of Utrecht and as a paralegal at a legal start-up and completed internships within both the legal and the judiciary profession.

Anna Sträter

Anna Sträter is a junior associate at bureau Brandeis. She specializes in gaming, media and telecommunications. She acts in various administrative law procedures, advises on scarce licences and focuses on the Open Government Act (in Dutch: Wet open overheid; formerly the Government Information (Public Access) Act).

After her bachelor’s degree at the Utrecht Law College, Anna followed the master Private Law with the specialisation Intellectual Property at the University of Utrecht. She wrote her thesis on deepfakes and the General Data Protection Regulation. During her studies, Anna studied in Rome for half a year at the Luiss Guido Carlo University and was president of her student association.

Prior to joining bureau Brandeis, Anna worked at a legal consultancy firm specializing in privacy and online reputation management.

Lara Elzas

Lara Elzas is an attorney-at-law at bureau Brandeis. She specialises in (European) competition law and sector-specific regulation.

Lara has extensive experience with all aspects of (European) competition law, including (phase one and phase two) merger control, cartels and abuse of a dominant position cases. Lara also has specific knowledge of the Market & Government Act, the Platform-to-Business’ Regulation and the Security Review Investment Mergers and Acquisitions Act (Wet Vifo).

Before joining bureau Brandeis, Lara worked as a senior lawyer in the competition department of the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM). She worked on a variety of complex competition law cases in different sectors (such as media, digital, retail, agriculture, transport and maritime). She gained extensive experience in advising on and analysing  competition law issues, conducting market interviews, oral hearings and dawn raids of the ACM. Lara also worked on international matters, such as participating in the cartel expertise group of the European Competition Network (ECN). Moreover, Lara was seconded to the European Commission for several months where she worked in the Directorate-General for Competition on a major second-phase merger case in the steel industry and was involved in an international cartel investigation.

In 2020, Lara finished with distinction the postgraduate specialisation course in Competition Law  at the Grotius Academy. In 2015, Lara obtained a Master’s degree in European Law and a Master’s degree in Corporate Law at the University of Leiden. In addition, she participated in the Honours Programme for Master students of Leiden University. During her studies she was, among other things, active in Mordenate, a study association for leading students of the Leiden Law Faculty. She also did a six month-exchange-programme at the Universitat de Barcelona and interned at a leading law firm in the (European) competition law department.

Vision

Nienke de Bruijn

Nienke de Bruijn works as an attorney at bureau Brandeis. She specializes in resolving disputes in the areas of information law and fundamental rights.

Nienke obtained her cum laude master’s degree in Law at the VU University in Amsterdam. Given her affinity with the growing importance of the online tech industry, she followed a master’s minor in International Technology Law. During her bachelor at the University of Utrecht, Nienke studied American history and politics at the University of Florida for a semester.

In addition to her studies, Nienke was already active as a part-time paralegal at a law firm and was part of the youth think tank of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where she focused on transatlantic relations. She participated in international speech and lobbying competitions at Oxford and Harvard University and won an award in this area. Nienke also won the Amsterdam and National Pleading Competitions in 2022.

In her spare time, Nienke works as a spinning instructor at Rocycle Amsterdam and has participated in the BKB Academy. Nienke is also involved as a volunteer in various social initiatives, such as Waaromkiesjij.nl and De Kiesmannen.

Vision

Joris Viellevoije

Joris Viellevoije is a junior associate at bureau Brandeis. He specialises in resolving disputes in the field of financial law.

Because of his affinity with FinTech such as cryptocurrencies and innovative payment service providers, Joris enrolled in the master specialisation in Financial Law at Radboud University Nijmegen with a focus on the regulation of the financial markets.

In addition to his studies, Joris did an internship at a law firm in Amsterdam and at a Dutch Supervisory Authority. Furthermore, Joris participated in the Willem C. Vis Moot Court Competition, an annual international pleading competition in the field of arbitration law.

Joris also completed the interdisciplinary Honours programme of the Radboud University, was chairman of the study association of the Radboud Honours Academy and in that context studied in China and India and also in Santa Barbara.

Vision

Timo Hieselaar

Timo Hieselaar is working as a junior associate at bureau Brandeis. He specialises in (European) competition law.

In the course of his studies, Timo developed specific interest for European economic law, and competition law in particular. He focused on this field of law during his masters at the Radboud University, where he completed a master’s degree in European Business Law (cum laude). His thesis on across-platforms parity agreements was awarded a 9/10 (high 1st).

Timo was an intern at the EU competition law sections of two prominent international law firms. In 2019, he participated in the prestigious European Law Moot Court Competition, in which he and his team reached the (regional) finals.

During his studies, Timo worked as a clerk of the Court of Arnhem. He assisted, amongst others, the court in dealing with a class action suit.

Moreover, Timo is also interested in societal matters within the EU and abroad. For instance, Timo took part in the interdisciplinary Honoursprogramme of the Radboud University during which he gained knowledge of various fields of study. Part of this programme concerned conducting a research in Washington D.C. and New York on voter inequality in the United States of America. After obtaining a bachelor’s degree in European and Dutch law in Nijmegen, he completed another bachelor’s degree in English European law at the Nottingham Trent University in the UK with a First Class Honours distinction.

Minke Gommer

Minke Gommer is a junior associate at bureau Brandeis. She specializes in information law and fundamental rights.

Minke obtained her master’s degree in Information Law and Public International Law at the University of Amsterdam. In addition, she earned a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and participated in an extracurricular honours program at the University of Groningen.

After her studies, Minke worked for the Dutch government for a number of years, including the Ministry of Justice and Security and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She also worked as a lecturer in fundamental rights at the University of Amsterdam.

Minke has been working at bureau Brandeis since September 2019.

Vision

Tessel Bossen

Tessel Bossen is an associate at bureau Brandeis. She specializes in media and intellectual property law and (antitrust) damages claims.

Tessel is regularly involved as counsel to plaintiffs who are looking for recovery of damages from antitrust cartels or abuses of a dominant position, independently or through class action. For instance, Tessel has been involved in various damages claims in the context of the so-called Trucks Cartel Case, amongst others on behalf of the foundation “Stichting Truck Cartel Recovery“. Furthermore, Tessel is engaged in (proposed) damages claims against major Tech giants such as Google and Facebook. In that context her background in information law proves to be very useful.

Tessel is one of the regular contributors to Q Class Actions, bureau Brandeis’ journal on class actions and antitrust damages litigation.

Nationally, Tessel also advises and litigates in a wide range of disputes related to the world of media and entertainment. She does so as counsel to individual artists and authors, publishers, film producers, record labels and (other) larger companies within the creative sector.

Tessel holds a master’s degree in Information Law  (Institute for Information Law (IViR), University of Amsterdam (UvA)). In the course of her master’s degree, she studied a semester in the city she has fallen in love with since: New York City (Cardozo Law School). Prior to her master’s studies, Tessel received her bachelor’s degree with honors from the UvA and spent one semester studying at the University of Copenhagen. Furthermore, Tessel participated in multiple moot court competitions, among which the prestigious ‘Monroe E. Price Media Law Moot Court’ at Oxford University. During her studies, Tessel also worked as an external clerk at the Amsterdam District Court.

Tessel joined bureau Brandeis in June 2018.

Jacob van de Velde

Jacob van de Velde is a junior associate at bureau Brandeis. He specializes in information law and privacy.

He obtained a master in public international law and constitutional and administrative law at the Free University in Amsterdam. After having worked for a while in the IT-sector, he continued his legal career with a master in Information Law at the Institute for Information Law at the University of Amsterdam. Jacob therefore has knowledge on both technology and law. He wrote his thesis on the neutrality of internet intermediaries.

Jacob joined bureau Brandeis in December 2017.

Vision

Nathan van der Raaij

Nathan van der Raaij is an associate at bureau Brandeis. He specialises in corporate and commercial litigation.

In particular Nathan has a focus on complex multi-jurisdictional litigation, including class actions and antitrust damages litigation. He is involved as counsel to plaintiffs in multiple proceedings under the WAMCA, the new Dutch regime for collective redress introduced in 2020. Nathan also regularly acts in director’s liability cases and shareholders’ disputes.

Nathan obtained his master’s degree in European Law at the Leiden Law School of the University of Leiden. During his master’s studies he had a special focus on European competition law. Prior to his master’s Nathan studied at the VU University of Amsterdam (bachelor) and a semester at the University of Padova in Italy where he studied international trade law.

In 2013 Nathan founded a student-run platform that provides legal advice in English to expats, international students and start-ups. The legal services varied from advising in consumer issues to the drafting of contracts. As a native English speaker Nathan is adept at explaining Dutch law to international clients. Nathan is also a regular contributor to Q Class Actions, bureau Brandeis’ journal on class actions and antitrust damages litigation.

Nathan joined bureau Brandeis in June 2017.

Recent work:

  • Nathan has been involved in various class actions under the WAMCA and cartel damage cases, such as the Diesel scandal, TikTok and the Trucks cartel.
  • Nathan is involved in a complex multi-jurisdictional execution procedure on behalf of a charitable organisation.
  • Nathan successfully assisted a US company that helps institutional investors recover their claims in class actions and mass settlements in the Fortis settlement.
Vision

Sam van Velze

Sam van Velze is associate at bureau Brandeis. She specializes in information law, particularly copyright, media and trademark law. Litigation and advising start-ups and established companies are part of Sam van Velze’s daily practice.

In 2015, Sam van Velze obtained her Research Master’s degree Information Law at the the Institute for Information Law (IViR) and the University of Amsterdam (UvA). During her Master studies, she focused on all legal aspects of the information society. Her interest particularly goes out to the application of law on the Internet and new digital issues.

Her thesis “Communication to a New Public, A Critical Analysis of the CJEU’s new public criterion in EU copyright law” has been awarded a nine out of ten and won the Internet Thesis Prize 2016 for best thesis in the field of Internet and law.

During her studies Sam van Velze studied a semester at the University of Toronto in Canada and the University of Copenhagen in Denmark. In addition to her work at bureau Brandeis, Sam van Velze is founder of the IViR Alumni Group and organizes annual meetings for all former students of the IViR.

Sam van Velze publishes articles on copyright, in particular the right of communication to the public, in both Dutch and international scientific journals. With her Dutch article “Het ‘nieuw publiek’ criterium hoort niet thuis in het Europese mededelingsrecht”, she won the VIE-prize 2017. This prize is awarded each year by the Association for Intellectual Property (AIPPI) for best publication in the field of intellectual property and competition law.

Sam van Velze has been a member of the Dutch Bar since July 2016.
